Description:
This course describes species and cultivars of turfgrasses and their establishment, maintenance, nutrition and soil requirements. Weed, insect and disease identification and management are also discussed.
This course is accredited by the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America for 3.6 GCSAA education points. These education points are applicable towards Class A and certification entry and renewal for GCSAA members.

Course Topics:
- What is Turf – History, purpose, benefits and quality, and management levels.
- The Turfgrass Plant – Seeds, germination, anatomy, sexual and asexual reproduction and identification.
- Turfgrass Species and Characteristics – Cool- and warm-season turfgrasses, bluegrass, bentgrass, perennial ryegrass, fine leaf fescues and tall fescues.
- Establishment – Soil preparation, seeding and sodding.
- Cultural Practices: Mowing and cultivation.
- Cultural Practices: Irrigation – Amount, frequency, timing, irrigation scheduling and water management tools.
- Fertilization - Nitrogen sources, application rates, timing and methods; phosphorus; potassium; micronutrients; biostimulators.
- Soils and the Turfgrass Rootzone - texture, structure, porosity, density, pH, construction of rootzones, thatch.
- Abiotic Stresses – Wear, temperature, ice, desiccation, shade, petroleum spills.
- Pests – Turf diseases, insects and weeds and management; IPM.
- Management of Creeping Bentgrass and Annual Bluegrass Greens
