Description:

This is an introductory design appreciation course that is designed to raise your awareness and understanding of several components of landscape design. You will develop an analytical ‘eye’ for design styles, landscape structures, and the use of building and plant materials. You will also develop a “design vocabulary” that will help you articulate key concepts of landscape design.

Please note, Designing the Landscape does not provide drawing/presentation skills needed to create landscape designs. To learn graphic techniques and design principles, see Landscape Design I and II.

Landscape practitioners and gardeners with a broad spectrum of experience and knowledge, wishing to improve their landscape design appreciation skills.

  • Background Issues - Describe the purpose and benefits of landscape design; become familiar with design vocabulary; observe and assess examples of landscape designs


  • Factors Affecting Landscape Design - Describe the impact that people, regulations, existing landscapes, fit, weather and types of landscape improvements have on a design


  • Landscape Graphics - Compare drawing types and identify landscape symbols used on landscape plans


  • Ingredients of Landscape Design - Define and describe the use of landforms, plant forms, built forms, built structures, building materials, water and lighting on a landscape design


  • Tools of Landscape Design - Compare design vs. decoration; discuss design principles, elements and traditions; identify current design trends


  • Recipe for Landscape Design - Review the six-step, Design Process to identify and assess the client and site.
