Description:

This course discusses the components, tools and skills needed to operate a greenhouse. Topics include greenhouse structures, heating and cooling systems, greenhouse soils, light, temperature, humidity and plant and soil-water relationships.

Nursery and greenhouse personnel interested in effectively growing healthy crops while generating financial return.

Course Topics:

  • Greenhouse Structures - Types and components of greenhouse structures; covering materials; environmental control systems.


  • Light - The process of photosynthesis; light quality, carbon dioxide, temperature and photoperiodism.


  • Temperature - Capacity and design of heating systems; ventilation and cooling requirements; energy conservation.


  • Carbon Dioxide and Other Gases – CO2 enrichment and requirements; greenhouse air pollutants.


  • Growing Media - Functions and requirements of a growing medium; physical and chemical properties of amendments; media formulation.


  • Water - Water potential, quality and systems; relative humidity and relationship to temperature and ventilation.


  • Nutrition and Fertilizers - Nutrient function and plant requirements; principles of nutrient uptake and availability; fertilizer concentrations and calculations.
